The word architecture comes from the Greek arkhi meaning chief and téktōn meaning creator. In today’s technology landscape, it has evolved into a broad discipline, often combined with prefixes such as Enterprise, Domain, Solution, Software, or Integration. It is also closely tied to technology stacks like Salesforce, Azure, or AWS.

At its core, architecture is about designing systems that are structured, scalable, and aligned with purpose.

Salesforce Architecture

Salesforce Architecture can be compared to the blueprint of a building.

When constructing a building in a specific country, such as the Netherlands, there are regulations and constraints that must be followed. The approach differs depending on whether you are building a standalone house or a multi-tenant structure. The design must respect these constraints while remaining functional and future-proof.

The same applies to Salesforce. The platform operates within defined limits and provides a wide range of capabilities and building blocks, including core platform features and specialized clouds.

Salesforce Architecture focuses on selecting the right components and structuring them correctly, taking into account platform capabilities, limitations, scalability, and maintainability. It ensures that the foundation of the system is solid and built to last.

Solution Architecture

If Salesforce Architecture is the blueprint, Solution Architecture is how everything comes together to support real-world use.

It defines how different components, including Salesforce and external systems, work together to achieve a business outcome.

Using the building analogy, it is about how rooms are connected and used. A kitchen should be accessible, a bedroom private, and even small details such as how a door opens can impact usability and safety.

In a system context, Solution Architecture defines business processes, user journeys, and how responsibilities are distributed across systems.

For example, a system may need to check available phone numbers. The logic for managing availability may sit in a provisioning domain, but delivering a number to a customer requires coordination between Salesforce components and downstream services. Solution Architecture ensures that all these parts work together seamlessly.

Integration Architecture

Integration Architecture focuses on how systems communicate with each other.

In the building analogy, this is similar to how utilities such as electricity, water, and gas are connected to the building and distributed internally across rooms and areas with higher demand.

In technology systems, Integration Architecture defines how data moves between systems, how APIs are exposed, and how reliability and performance are maintained.

Continuing the phone number example, Salesforce may need to retrieve an available number and present it to a user or agent. How that request is exposed, whether through an API gateway, middleware, or direct integration, is part of Integration Architecture. It ensures that systems interact in a reliable, secure, and efficient way.
